June assessments

Our June assessments have shown a great deal of progress in all areas with our students which is really exciting. Particularly our literacy programmes seem to be making huge leaps forward.
In recent 5.5 and 6y surveys we have seen that our children have a great understanding about texts.

We have also had some huge improvements in reading levels with this months Running Records. Although some children have been working at a lower level in June than in May,  their skills have been consolidated and accuracy improved allowing them to now move up more readily.

Writing easstle scores show no improvement but within our class we know there has been some drastic improvements this term. We have been teaching recount structures which has really supported some of our students to write more detail. They can now write several sentences that make sense and follow a logical sequence. They are quick to write and no longer seem to struggle at writing time.

Numeracy has also been progressing well. We have a group of students who are working through some stage 4 knowledge and strategies successfully. None of these students are yet 6. One even showed some stage 5 strategies in his Gloss. This is really exciting and it challenges us to keep pushing them forward without leaving any gaps.

Reading Progress

Our kids have done so well in their reading this term and some have made huge progress. We have students who were reading Level 6 in April and are now working instructionally at Level 10-11 pushing towards 12. The progress is across the board and we are so excited with how they are going. Our small flexible groups and constant pushing up of levels is working for all of our children.

WALTs and Success Criteria

I stumbled across an interesting piece of writing around the currently common practice of needing Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for lessons. I haven't done any other reading around this particular writers ideas or theories but it definitely made me question and challenge the belief that all lessons need learning intentions and success criteria.

I also thought particularly about one of my students in reading recovery whom I am forever trying to keep on track, but his own thinking is brilliant. The time constraints of fitting the lesson into half an hour means I am stopping his train of thought which often shows fabulous connection making and understanding. He links things together from books he read weeks ago or something he has done or seen at home. I fear that I am actually stopping him from being such a wide thinker every time I have so say "come on lets just read the story" "we don't have time to talk about that". I am killing his learning and desire to connect the new with something he knows.

How can we let kids learn in natural and authentic ways that follow their own understandings and questions when everything has to be pre-planned and linked back to assessment data to fit a very narrow and specific criteria?
